I am wondering how to add a column to my homepage that shows the five most recent posts from the blog page located under the "Latest News" heading.

Here is the link to my development site.

and below is the code that I believe I must edit to achieve this.

If anyone could offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Try the following using WP_Query:

<div class="news-column">
    <h3>Latest News</h3>
    <ul>
        <?php
        //get news
        $args->posts_per_page = 5;

        //query
        $query = new WP_Query($args);
        while($query->have_posts()):$query->the_post();
            ?>
            <li class="news-item">
                <h4><?php the_title(); ?></h4>
                <p><?php the_date('F jS, Y'); ?></p>
                <?php the_excerpt(); ?>
                <p class="footnotes"><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>">Continue reading</a></p>
            </li>
            <?php
        endwhile;
        wp_reset_postdata();
        ?>
    </ul>
</div>
