I'm working on a Headless Wordpress setup. I want my Wordpress posts rendered elsewhere. I want to write these posts using the basic Gutenberg block editor, and show them on a separate non-Wordpress website having the same block layout. (Doesn't have to be pixel-perfect, but if I have 2 columns in my editor, then it needs to look like 2 columns on the website.)

So far I have largely followed Gutenberg in Headless WordPress: Render Blocks as HTML:

  1. Installed WP GraphQL and use it to fetch the rendered post HTML
  2. Added wp-includes/css/dist/block-library/common.min.css, wp-includes/css/dist/block-library/style.min.css and wp-includes/css/dist/block-library/theme.min.css to the page where the rendered post HTML is shown

What I got looks half there: I did get my 2 columns, but the 2×2 image grid in the second column isn't being picked up as a grid. Instead, it just renders 4 images one under another.

I found that some flex CSS is missing. On my Wordpress site the CSS is minified and rendered inline, and looks like this:

<style id='global-styles-inline-css' type='text/css'>
body{--wp--preset--color--black: #000000;--wp--preset--color--cyan-bluish-gray: #abb8c3;--wp--preset--color--white: #ffffff;--wp--preset--color--pale-pink: #f78da7;--wp--preset--color--vivid-red: If I copy this CSS as is and simply add it to my external website, the post renders fine. But this is hardcoding and it doesn't seem like a correct approach. Is there a better way to have these CSS styles, wherever they come from, served on my external website?

  • note that if you're setting individual options on specific blocks that are unique to that block there's a high chance some inline styling might be generated. While I don't have an answer for generating global styles output in a REST response which is the most direct answer to your question, you do have the option of eliminating those controls via theme.json, then registering block styles. This way the block style would have all that styling attached, and you'd just have a HTML class to implement in CSS in your client app/site, sidestepping the problem entirely

  • @TomJNowell reading up on Global Settings & Styles (theme.json), thank you for pointing me Apr 12, 2023 at 20:15
  • @TomJNowell I understood that theme.json can be used to e.g. disable the custom colours, as well as any other controls. So by saying eliminating those controls, do you mean I should remove the ability to create these grids etc. that come with the block editor, and then reintroduce some custom grids instead? And because I will have to make the styling for these custom grids, I will control where it is located, so I will be able to reuse the same CSS in both admin editor as well as externally? • some of those controls will introduce HTML classes, some will introduce inline styles, the latter could be eliminated in favor of block styles which use classes. Classes that you then implement on the client side, bypassing the problem. Which controls those are I do not know off the top of my head, and for some that suggestion may not resolve the problem. Note again that these are comments, not answers, and I have not written a solution/answer to your question, just trying to be helpful.

I know this is an old question, but WP Engine's Faust library has some methods of dealing with global styles that could likely be applied regardless of your project. Check out the generateGlobalStylesheet command from the faust-cli: https://faustjs.org/reference/getstyles
