I'm having trouble getting the built-in wp-sitemap.xml in Wordpress 5.5 to work (self-hosted). It's just not there. I tried the most recommended steps:

  • disable and re-enable search engine discoverability
  • save permalink settings
  • check theme functions.php for add_filter('wp_sitemaps_enabled', '__return_false');

No luck.

Some post were mentioning that sitemaps may be disabled when the blog is hosted in a subfolder on the server, such as https://example.com/blog/. The automatically generated robots.txt seems to work this way, since I don't have that either. If that is the case, it could be made clearer in the backend UI.

Is there a way to get sitemap generation to work in my setup without the use of plugins? I'm totally open to modifying my theme code, if it helps.
