I am wondering about this function redirect_guess_404_permalink

My permalink structure includes the category name in the URL. I am doing nothing more to the various posts than changing their categories, as part of a site-wide category cleanup. I am concerned about SEO penalties.

I know that 301 Redirects in this case (where the content is the same and still relevant) are supposed to not incur SEO penalties... but I'm wondering how reliable this function is and what is best practice for WordPress in this case to maintain SEO... should I be doing a sitemap as well or do a manual 301 redirect in the .htaccess... was just hoping for advise in this case.

  • I don't see a possible usage of .htaccess since you're changing some post and not replacing a /category/ with /another_category/ sitewide. you should address every post you're changing category – Andrea Somovigo Aug 4 '18 at 17:02
