Oops! Globalizing $score does indeed work. I goofed and set $score first then globalized which clearly doesn't work. Doing it the proper way by globalizing $score first then giving it a value works as expected. Thanks all.

Are you able to print or echo your result to ensure that your function is indeed working prior to passing it to the filter?
