Fixed it, I had a require_once file that had this code inside it: if ( !current_user_can( 'manage_options' ) ) { wp_die( __( 'You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.' ) ); }

Nov 24, 2021 at 12:47 | comment | added | dominotrix | I get “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page” when I use the search form as non-logged-in user. If i search while I am the admin, it works correctly. Any ideas why that happens? | |

You run admin-ajax.php because that's how it's done. It provides a forwards and backwards compatible approach and neatly segregates the rendering engine from the ajax functionality being executed. Don't go around the mountain if there's a tunnel right in front of you.

why would your run admin-ajax.php ? Sounds scary. You can just query the current page url...
