Oh right, I didn't notice they were using the same filter function. The easiest option is probably to leave the original function as is and create a new function for 'nav_menu_css_class' - I'll update the answer...

thanks for the feedback bonger; only issue I'm encountering is that if I try to include the filters for 'nav_menu_item_id' and 'page_css_class' as included in my original code, I get a PHP error. Can I also filter out the default menu ids and page classes with your approach?
