I tried is_paged and the second page is now hiding the latest post with the different layout, and showing the rest of the posts within the masonry index, but they are not the older posts but the same ones on the first page. Guess I have to put a variable that calculates which page it is and then set the offset according to that in both the loops! Hope that works, otherwise I will be happy to try more ideas.
