I am surprised it is this complicated. I would have thought your hosting company would have "addon domain" option which would do this for you. eg) documentation.cpanel.net/display/ALD/_Addon+vs.+Parked+Domains

I think this is what we did because of problems with 'wordpressmu' appearing in permalinks. My DBA has given me the login for the second database now. Thanks for the help.
