comment Any easy way to automatically set the first inline image in a post as the thumbnail?
@Toskan You may want to ask a question about your specific problem, saying that you're using this plugin, showing exactly what you're doing, and saying that it doesn't work for you. I'm not sure comments here are the right place to debug your issue.

@Toskan I just tried it with a random image from my Flickr stream, just pasted into a new Post as <img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/12722196853_252881b4b6_z.jpg">. It ended up as the Featured Image just fine. Don't know what you're doing differently, but I can't get it not to work. Sorry! The documentation says "The first image in your post is used as Post Thumbnail. This is irrespective of whether the image is an uploaded image or inserted through URL", and that's working for me.

@Toskan I just uploaded a new image to that very example site, on WP 3.8.1, and it worked fine. Can you maybe be a little more precise about what you're doing and how it's not working? (Bear in mind it won't automatically work on existing content -- there's a "Generate Thumbnails" button on the plugin's settings screen that will generate featured images for existing posts...)

comment Return code from save_post action?
Thank you! I further allayed my worries by checking the source for do_action(), which clearly discards the result of its call_user_func_array() call... I suppose those examples may have been leftovers from a time when actions and filters were perhaps a bit less distinct...

comment Edit Custom Database Tables in Wordpress
Incidentally, the WP_List_Table documentation now explicitly says "This class may be used by developers through extending the class and overriding its methods", so this is definitely a supported solution these days.

comment Moving WP install from local to live, what about wp_posts GUID?
Yes, I also normally dump the DB, then globally replace in the dump before restoring it. I also just noticed that under the Codex advice on moving multi-site installs, there's now a link to a specialised search and replace tool that copes with safely replacing in PHP serialised DB data, specifically for doing things like this.

Yes, I was just about to suggest Multiple Post Thumbnails. It should do what you want with the minimum of effort.

Thank you. Great, complete answer. (And it's nice to know I wasn't missing something more obvious!)
