comment Per Post Type Revision Numbers
This is the winner: gist.github.com/2884090 You do have to roll your own revision meta box, however. The built in one still uses WP_POST_REVISIONS.

Except wp_insert_post_data does not take care of deleting extra revisions, which is what I want to avoid.

comment Keep main articles and author blogs seprerate, News / Magazine like site
Why multi site? It seems like a custom post type for the main "official" articles and just normal posts for other stuff would work well. Then just beef up author pages to make them look more like "blogs".

comment Alternative to esc_textarea
autop will insert HTML that esc_textarea will then escape (convert to character entities), so that's probably not going to work.

comment How is the data stored in the database?
If you're reading from a custom table, you'll need to write your own CRUD api. Fortunately, there is '$wpdb`, WordPress' database connection and all around great utility, to make your life easier: codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/wpdb

comment Style Differently Edited Posts
Yes there is! You should put it in another question. Something like "How to Expire a Post Meta Key". Here's how you add columns to the post list table: justintadlock.com/archives/2011/06/27/…
