comment Buddypress - New user type with no profile and can't interact but can be admin of a group
Thanks for this, I had to do something similar. There's a plugin that allows you to add user roles, then I had to test against that role to restrict use of the site.

comment Using Subversion to deploy WordPress
Similarly updating each site separately allows for us to assess any potential incompatibilities with the new version on a more localised case, and lastly having a separate hosting account on our dedicated server for each client means that we can build other web apps and infrastructure around their wordpress installation.

I don't think that multi-site is a good option for us. Its very useful to have a series of different installs for our clients. It means that if any of our clients suddenly command more server resources we can move them with (relative) ease to an amazon EC cloud. Or if they wish to deploy to their own server in the future we can benefit from that as well. Unless I have misunderstood multi-site this would suggest one wordpress installation no no ability to easily migrate single sites. Do all sites have their own mysql databases? Or are they all amalgamated?

This is very useful! :) Thank you very much. So every time you deploy to each of the different servers do you duplicate the database from the live site? You say that you deploy to a staging server (stage.domain.com) for QA and content editing. What happens if the database changes while you're running the stage server on the live site? i.e. you or your client logs into stage and updates some content, but at the same time an contributor posts a new article on the live site? Do you just effect the content edits AGAIN on the live site? How do you tackle database structure changes?

comment Wordpress links/bookmarks - need to urlencode because spaces are getting stripped
instead of urlencode (I take your point) I could use preg_replace("/ /","%20",$theurl);

I understand, but my client doesn't want to have to type %20 every time they want a space. :)
