This answer is incomplete and it doesn't give a solution as it is.

comment Is it possible set a featured image with external image URL
You could do it with a custom field where you store the external image URL. It may be difficult to make it work every time the_post_thumnail() is present (or similar function) or to make it works with different image sizes defined by the theme or plugin.

Mmmm....that is like the second example I posted in my answer (maybe you didn't see it) but in my answer I did it in the main query and in the code you linked, again, you trash the main query after it is executed and make a new one. Think in performance.

I've tested with normal fields and it is working prefectly. I'm sorry but I've never used ACF. Questions in this site should be specific to developing with Wordpress, support for third party software is very limited simply because we can't know about every plugin, widget or theme out there and the code every coder write. Anyway, it seems that repeater fields of ACF don't work with Wordpress methods and you can't use WP_Query object or get_posts functions, you have to do with direct sql queries -> advancedcustomfields.com/resources/…

I've tested the code and it works now. I forget $query->set('post_type', 'recipes_post_types');. See edited answer.

I've added a sample of standard loop in the answer. Also, note that now you don't need a separate template file. Just use the standard search template of your theme and if it works, then try to build a seaparate template if you really need it for design purpose. Also, note that I've used "recipes" as post_type and "recipe_single_ingr" as meta_key, maybe you need to adjust this values.
