comment Stop WordPress from reserving slugs for media items?
I haven't looked at the latest code but I think the issue is in the handling of post types in wp_unique_post_slug(). The SQL query is only searching within the same post-type so it will not check for a collision with attachments.

comment Shortcodes won't work on live environment
With that out of the way, the real issue if you wanted to get this working as a part of a class is to avoid calling the add_action() the way you are. Create a regular function in your class to add with add_action and you'd be able to have your short code handler inside your class.

Try removing the quotes around $this. You're passing a string '$this' vs the value of $this.

comment Internal Server Error and bad CSS
This looks like a server configuration error and not a Wordpress problem. At least that's where you need to start. Probably allowing too many children on one of the services running on your server. Server configuration seems off topic for this area.

comment Automating the process of shortcode generation in a plugin - how is it done?
If the items you are referencing are rows in one of the databases, such as posts, then you can use the post ID in the manner described here. The ID is assigned as the post is added to the post table and is guaranteed to be unique.

comment Upload path/URL weirdness for the main blog of a multisite/network setup
I've arrived at the same sort of problem via a different path. After migrating to a new hosting provider (and making a few tweaks along the way) I'm also seeing the back-end work fine but the front-end using the the blogs.dir directory for the main site. Did you find a solution?

comment 500 error when using virtual host
I noticed it was old, so I would have expected current source to not have this problem. Seems it's been re-introduced if it was fixed in the past.

Regarding the RewriteCond - It's my understanding that the -f [OR] -d will match if the file or directory does exist. The RewriteRule on the subsequent line (RewriteRule ^ - [L]) would fire (^ matches any URI) and terminate re-insertion of the URI to the engine (- means no substitution and [L] meaning this is the last rule to be applied on this iteration).

I'm curious which part of the WP source you looked at. With WP4.0 the sub-dir match portion of these rules still appears to suggest using ([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?. I'm looking at wp-admin/network.php.

@s_ha_dum - apologies! Hard to keep track sometimes which sites want code and which ones don't. :)

The built-in do_shortcode() parses WP style short codes so it's not going to recoginize those using the curly braces. That plugin is probably doing the parsing of the content itself.

comment jQuery and AJAX Not working with Select Form Element
Have you examined $_POST content to see if there's something unexpected about it? I usually just send stuff to the server error log to have a look in this sort of context. For example: error_log(var_export($_POST, true));

comment post meta data clearing on autosave
Technically, using a filter to perform an action like this is not the intention of the filters. A filter is intended to alter the data it has been passed and return the altered data for use in subsequent actions. An action should be used when an operation is being performed. In this case the 'save_post' or 'save_post_<post_type>' actions are appropriate. They are only called if all other operations related to saving the new post have succeeded.

comment How do I make a draft post accessible to everyone?
I'm perplexed about the reason as well. If you want everyone to see the post, why not simply publish the post? You could use custom fields on the post to track any special state you might desire to define.

comment How can I create a virtual user on WordPress
As I said, the prudent thing to do is discuss the requirement with the client and talk them out of it. Determine what problem they are attempting to solve by building a back door into their environment. It's a security risk to add it to the site. Presumably they would never know if they had been hacked using this backdoor and it would require code changes to update the password. Understand the problem the client is trying to solve and then propose more secure methods of solving it.
