comment How can I get a traceback on function calls?
@codearachnid, I apparently can't install xdebug on my Linux install, because of package version issues (it requires outdated versions of mySQL).

@PieterGoosen, I understand the need for code snippets generally, but the help I'm looking for here is not with a particular block of code, but with a general inability to debug code because I don't have a function backtrace. In other words, I have no idea what functions are being called which produce an error. If I had a list of the functions called, I might be able to pinpoint the problem.

I'm not really using any IDE or profiling tools at the moment, apart from vim, php -l, and lots of reloading pages. The environment is a linux server. I just found out about the Debug Bar plugin, but I'm fairly new to this, so I'm not sure what I should be using.

comment How can I find the hook I need to rewrite a function?
Thanks, thanks makes a lot of sense. But when I write a class MLA_BBP_Forums_Group_Extension extends BBP_Forums_Group_Extension { function create_screen() { in my plugin file, it doesn't seem to affect anything.

But if there is a relevant hook, how would I go about finding it?

@s_ha_dum, Thanks, that's helpful. I still can't find the relevant hook for the function I want to rewrite, though--there don't seem to be any do_action() around the function I'm trying to rewrite, and maybe that's not what I should be looking for.

plugins/buddypress/readme.txt says it's version 1.8.1. I guess what I'm looking at is more of an extension to bbpress that interfaces with Buddypress.

I tried echoing $menu_ord, but it doesn't return anything, so it might be empty. Also, my admin bar items are links with IDs, created with $wp_admin_bar->add_menu(), so I'm not sure I can reference them with a .php entry.
