Thanks very much for this detailed explanation. It's so unfortunate, I think, that WP testing is so little documented.

I have a feeling that would probably solve the issue in most cases, but I feel like in this case, since the plugin name and text domain don't match, it might not be taking.

Using the Codestyling Localization plugin in conjunction with Codestyling Location Preserver, I'm getting Error: The actual loaded translation content does not match the textdomain: bp-ass. I guess this means it's a problem with the plugin, and not anything I'm doing? I'll notify the plugin maintainer.

Changing anything in the plugin's directory isn't a good idea, though, because any update will overwrite it.

But why use two extra plugins when I can just put a file in a directory? The only problem is, I don't know which directory to put them in, wp-content/languages, wp-content/languages/bp-ass, wp-content/languages/buddypress-group-email-subscription, or some other directory.

I don't think I understand the relation between *.po and *.mo files in wp-content/languages, wp-content/languages/some-plugin, and wp-content/plugins/languages. It looks like the plugin is loading the textdomain from plugin_basename, but I don't know how wp-content/languages overrides that, or what the plugin should be doing to load languages from wp-content/languages.
