comment Is “Featured Content” in Twenty Fourteen done with a plugin, or is it native in WP4.0?
I recall scratching my head over this once here.

I agree it's a great plugin. Your post reminded me of another great plugin so I added that my answer as well ;-)

comment How to get better performance for redirect from domain.tld/35 to domain.tld/full-permalink?
Yes something like that. The auto generation might work for a "small number" (what ever that means in actual numbers) of slugs and pretty static web. But I agree with your answer, one should have a really good reason for using it ;-)

@ialocin yes I totally agree with you there ;-) PS: The only way around it (that comes to my mind) is to auto generate the htaccess redirects with the actual slugs, maybe similar idea as with the generated sitemap.xml files, but that sounds crazy ;-) Another idea would be to use Javascript to modify the url with the correct slug, but I'm not sure where that will take us ;-)

@john I'm not sure the proposed RedirectMatch will give you better performance, since the core canonical redirect is determined within the template_redirect hook, that's fired a little bit later than the wp hook I proposed. That means you would still have to travel a little bit deeper into the PHP script.
