@Ashok the 'template_redirect' was indeed the answer. Would you like to submit your comment as an answer or should I answer it myself?

i'm sorry I made a mistake I meant to quote the filter that @Ashok provided in his comment. That leaves me with a problem. Your answer put me on the right track but didn't offer the solution directly, Ashok comment was the answer.

@Ashok showTraining() is a function of an class that is called by the function shortcodeDesinationFunction() which in turn hooks into init. Is template_redirect called before init?

comment Apache rewrite rules and wordpress problem
@Otto I just disabled the edirect_canonical and I think it has brought me a closer to the solution. When I entered the url /examentraining/vak/natuurkunde/vwo I used to end up on /examentraining/vak/ and now I get to /examentraining/vak/natuurkunde/vwo/ which returns an 404 not found.

comment WP Rewrite the last two parts of the URL
@s_ha_dum I found some documentation about endpoints but I don't think it's the best fit for my current situation, I only want the rewrite functionality on specific posts. And I also have a page that I need to rewrite that needs two parameters (the first example I gave). I think my code should work, I just don't know why it doesn't.
