I'm a hobbyist PHP/JavaScript programmer - recently back after a couple years of non-programming. My current fetish is WordPress. CSS is a weakness of mine, since design in general is also a weakness - I'm a little too "left-brained", or so I've been told.

Unresolved Tension

Try adding a <a href="<?php echo $redirect_url; ?>">Some Link Text</a> and see if it works. You don't need the wp_redirect(...) and die() parts.

@Christian: most everything in this comment belongs in your Question, please edit it to show what you've tried to do to fix the problem, and include what permalink structure you're having problems with, since that seems the root cause of your problem.

comment Execute shortcode within shortcode
Just found where WP does the same thing for the [embed] shortcode, since it too needs to run earlier. In WP 3.5, in wp-includes/class-wp-embed.php line 50 is the method run_shortcode(). The example I linked too is nearly identical (including code comments). So it would appear this is The WordPress Way to do it.

comment Execute shortcode within shortcode
As I said, I haven't tried it, but I don't see anything obvious in the example code that would make a significant difference in speed. As far as I can tell, it simply copies the variable containing the preexisting shortcodes (probably just a simple array), removes them en masse (which shouldn't be a significant slow-down) using remove_all_shortcodes(), creates your shortcode, then copies the old shortcodes variable back.

comment Is there a good Q&A platform to integrate into WordPress?
Welcome to WordPress Answers! Just a friendly bit of advice...when you're Answering a Question, make sure to check it's date. This one is nearly 2 years old. It helps (for me at least) to usually use the "Questions" link above to sort Questions by the most recent.

comment The plugin generated x characters of unexpected output, $wpdb not defined
@cg433n: That's good to know. So if I understand correctly, in the code in your Question, your global $wpdb reference (inside of test_install_plugin()) hasn't been instantiated yet at the point in time when register_activation_hook() is fired, is that right?

You can use WordPress for everything you've mentioned. But your Question is overly broad, you should to narrow it down to a specific problem (and explain how you've tried to solve it).

@Milo: Ahhh, thanks for the clarification, I thought that if accessed outside of a function in a plugin, it had global scope already. I also didn't know that $wpdb was instantiated prior to the plugin being loaded. Learn something new every Question!
