Adding --- 'terms' => $term_names --- to my args was what I needed. Thank you again Pieter for all your help.

mrwweb, not sure where I went wrong earlier in incorporating this into my much larger code, but it works perfectly. Thanks so much.

Unfortunately, it returns the same results as before. Thanks for your help. Maybe a custom sql query is the best option.

get_pageslug just gets the id of the post. ah yes, posts_per_page. Would be interested to hear your ideas. Thanks

Well, the idea is that I need to order the combined set of posts by the meta number. The first is for a particular set of pages, and the second query is for the most recent post from a custom post. If combining them works, I would like to know how to do that and still get the correct results with the added featured of being able to order all of the results. Thanks.

Turns out it was indeed conflict with another plugin. I had done a search for wp_new_user_notification but none of my plugins were using it, however wp_mail was used. Removing that plugin fixed it. Thanks.

comment order event posts by multiple custom fields
you're right, it's not ideal—I'm using a themeforest theme. But there's really no reason for their separation. I'll redo the custom field to one and then sort by that one field. Thanks

No, they won't go at all if I remove that, so both seem to be coming from that function. Exact same content, although the one with my admin name has everything all on one line instead of formatted with a line break.
