What are you going to do based on if it's true or false? It might make sense to call another function, or continue the process depending on what happens? If not, you might have to store the data to be retrieved at a later time.

This is bad design - the date should be stored in one field in a format that can easily compared such as Unix timestamp or YYYY/MM/DD - I would look to try and do that and your queries will be much simpler.
