Depending on what the subdomains are (can you give examples) they may be blocked by WordPress or your server. For instance, if you are trying to go to admin.domain.com or root.domain.com your server may have these reserved. We really need more info to help you out.

when you do #4 (restore the database) does WordPress allow you to log in? If so are you then asked to upgrade? Also like @TheDeadMedic said are you going from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2 or something else?
