I've seen that. However, in this page of the codex, they instruct you to use archive-{postype}.php. So that's what I did. codex.wordpress.org/Post_Types

Nevermind, turns out I was wee todd head and started working from the archive template that didn't have the get_header() call in it. Der. But now I have other problems entirely so will start a different question. This one is already confused enough :) +1's to you for trying to help!

Even when I remove the category arg it doesn't work, so I tested to see what file this is using to pull up. Turns out it wasn't using the archive-band_artists.php file at all, it was using the old category-artists.php used to display the query for standard post types. Isn't wordpress supposed to pull the key for custom post types? Or is it the slug? It's working now that I've edited category-artists.php... sort of. It's not pulling the header at all, so there are no styles, navbar, footer, etc.

Band_artist is the custom post type key. And yes, I triple checked to make sure the cat ID is correct. I take it by your response that this query should in fact work? The pages I am using to display them are called archive-band_artists.php and single-band_artists.php. Neither work, but when I convert these posts back to a standard post type they show up.

No error, it just doesn't display anything but the structure of the page. No database data. category was working just fine when it was pulling standard post types.

Sorry I don't understand. I never expected a lesson from you, I was just asking for clarification because you're answer didn't make sense. It just sounded backwards. Everyone has a different thought process. Mine is visual. I will enlist a friend for help. Most of the codex may as well be written in Klingon.

but there isn't one master style for them. all the categories have different styles associated with them and will display different sidebars. can you still use one master category page for this and still have variable styles/content and pretty permalinks to display the slug?

but the page content is managed in the actual pages. not a post. so if i do that how do i link the page content to the category page? sorry if i'm missing something. My pages: About, Contact, Podcast are about.php, contact.php and podcast.php with page templates for that content, but they also display queried data... or are you saying that i should have podcast.php and category-8.php as two documents, with the_content() in podcast.php and the loop structure in category-8.php? i'm feeling very dumb right now. thanks so much for helping

Wow, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed answer. I suppose I should expand on my post, though. I have written and maintained current themes so am [fairly] familiar with new features. I'm a designer tho, not a developer, so some of this comes easier than others (and yes, I need to get those thumbnails changed cause that script is heavy on my server). The page is currently set up as a custom template, so the slug matches the category name - in this case plasmodium.net/podcasts. so are you saying I use the loop for the_content() and query for the category list?
