I can't print_r because its an ajax function. I have however sent $post->ID back to JS and it outputs post ids as expected. The issue is with get_the_terms accepting it as an argument. Right?

Sorry @PieterGoosen I've added the function until the end of the foreach. The function is for a JS AJAX call and is pretty dynamic. Keeping track of pagination and such.

Yes I'm using $post->... for several things like if($post->post_type == ... and even get_post_meta($post->ID); Any ideas? This is a strange one.

I see. There should be rewrite rules that append '-1' to future conflicting URL's like native WP posts vs pages. I've created a trac ticket core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/34136#ticket would love your thoughts.

So if the goal is to remove the slug for CPT's couldn't we name the CPT something unique that wouldn't collide since it will never be seen in the URL anyways? Or is the post-name the possible conflict if named the same as a page?

thanks. Do you think this is better than creating the rewrites manually? I've seen that solution and it may keep the conflicts you mention at bay?

@dswebsme Agreed, but there are situations where you absolutely must change the URL. So other than why you can't natively and shouldn't, how do you do so efficiently?
