comment WordPress meta_query not working
Looks like it's stripping out the entire meta query for some reason. It might be choking on the hyphen in wp_comp_entry_competition-id? Try it without that part.

comment WordPress meta_query not working
In the print_r output of $lookup the WP_Query object, look for the request property and post it here. That's the MySQL statement itself, it should tell us more.

comment Using wp_query is it possible to orderby taxonomy?
C'mon, of course there are going to be some instances in which you will want to order posts by taxonomy term. Another example is a Movie post type with a Rating taxonomy. In a list of movies, it's very easy to imagine people wanting to order a list of movies by rating so all G-rated, then PG-rated, etc. movies appear at the top. (In this and the meal example they could be ordered by term_id instead of name.) There's a large gray area of instances where you're probably best served by a taxonomy and not meta, but it's probably also helpful for that taxonomy to be order-able.

comment wp_verify_nonce vs check_admin_referer
There's actually one big difference that affects usage...check_admin_referer kills the entire script with die() if the nonce isn't valid, whereas wp_verify_nonce returns false. So if there are certain normal circumstances in which the nonce will fail, use wp_verify_nonce so that the rest of the script still executes.

comment In what order does WordPress load plugin files?
What matters is what has loaded by the time apply_filters() runs. add_filter() must run before apply_filters(). If add_filter() is in a plugin file and not in another function, it will run on the plugins_loaded hook which is generally going to happen before you'd need apply_filters().

comment Permalinks only for posts
Which plugins do you run that don't support permalinks? If it's true that they don't support such a basic feature, I would be very wary of relying on them.

comment How to properly validate data from $_GET or $_REQUEST using WordPress functions?
Sure, I mean it's just something you have to think through. Every public method in your class can be forced to run by anyone at any time. That's not automatically an exploit, but it's a consideration. Is there a method in your class that deletes from your database? Is there a method that echoes your users' passwords? Will you ever add other methods you need to worry about? Etc.

comment enqueue jQuery into the footer
Re: "didn't do anything" -- check the page source. Is your version of jQuery being loaded at all? Is WP's version of jQuery still being loaded? As Chip said, try hooking wp_deregister_script to an earlier hook (maybe wp_loaded). Or, try changing the name of your script from jquery to google-jquery or something.

It really depends what you're trying to do. But generally you would set up each of them to run on a specific hook using the add_action() function, which allows you to set priority. codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/add_action
