comment Customizing page content layout
Obviously the Stewarty thought otherwise which is why he marked my answer as correct. If Stewarty didn't feel as though I answered his question, I would have clarified. And I think I did answer his question, he wanted a way to create pages where he can add additional fields for the user to enter content, ACF does that. Going to the ACF site presents with with code examples and use cases, there is no point repeating what the site I linked already has...

Welcome to the site and thanks for answering. Your solution is pretty nice actually, it's a nice compromise. I never did work out what was causing it, but this answer helps, so I've marked it as accepted.

comment Import Wordpress XML File from Within Functions.php
I am not asking anyone to do "the work" for me. You should never make assumptions Anu, especially when they're untrue. I am asking for guidance as to the best possible way to do something in Wordpress. I've been a member of this site long enough Anu to know the difference between a question and asking for free work. Are you saying that my question isn't valid if it relates to a commercial undertaking? Am I not allowed to ask for help if it's in relation to a site I am getting paid to build? 90% of all questions on this site I am guessing are by freelancers...

Wow. Just wow. This is one of the most detailed and impressive answers I've ever seen on this site, kudos to you man. After spending half a day reading this, I've come to the conclusion this is the right way to go about things. You've given me a lot to think about, but this is definitely the right track to follow. Thanks for taking the time to leave this answer.

Thanks for posting amolv. However, I'm not asking how to check if a theme has been activated (I'm already doing that). I'm more-so wanting to know how to automatically parse and import an XML file without user input.

That is an awful lot of memory to be assigning to Wordpress. Are you on shared hosting, a VPS or dedicated server? There could be deeper underlying issues here. Are you using Apache or another webserver like Nginx (perhaps both)?

comment Pass PHP variable to javascript
wp_localize_script is a very underused and powerful function for passing PHP values to a Javascript file. It's surprising not many people actually know about this powerful feature in Wordpress.

Thanks Chris. The issue isn't finding a suitable hook for detecting when activating a theme (I've got that part sorted) it's finding a way to import an XML file automatically into Wordpress. I've got the XML file in a folder in my theme folder called, "importxml" I would preferably like to use the existing Wordpress importer, strip out the manual stuff and use it to load my XML file without the user needing to do anything.

Perfect Jake. This did the trick, thank you very much. I wasn't aware of the load-post.php hook.

I appreciate you taking the time to post an answer Toscho. I awarded the answer to Jake as he provided a more complete example, but I upvoted your question. Thank you.

comment Issue with get_theme_mod returning a blank value instead of the saved value
The plot thickens my friend. I pasted the code from my theme into the Twenty Twelve functions.php file and what do you know, settings aren't saving... The Twenty Twelve theme customizer worked prior, but I paste in my code and it's like settings are being removed on page load. I've pasted the code I'm using to set things up here, can you see any issues with what I've done? pastebin.com/XzqURHw7 — And yep, have debugging enabled, etc.

No worries mate. I've edited my question with the results of var_dumping and other things I tried as well.

Thanks for the response Kaiser. Which "core-" file do you speak of sorry? I'm not aware of such a file.

comment Mapping Subdomains in Wordpress to give the appearance of a localised site, best approach?
Thanks Paramdeo. I am basically asking how I can have wildcarded subdomains, map them to a category which in turn sets some kind of global variable, transient, option value or cookie so I am able to ensure a user is only getting results within their particular region (custom DB queries).

Would this approach combined with the use of session cookies yield the desired result you reckon? If you can make that subdomain code a wildcard filter that will get all subdomains (except maybe www) it would redirect to the homepage, then in my script I would check for this value and set a cookie that I could check using an init hook or something. Can you set environment variables in the .htaccess to store values that can be fetched from a PHP script?

You misunderstand. I know what I want to do, I know how I want the site to work but the best and cleanest way possible to give the appearance of a localised site (complete with localised logo). How would I map a subdomain to a category in Wordpress and have it only show those categories contents as well as only post a listing to that location? Listings will be added via a custom front-end form, not from the backend.

comment How to use shortcode attribute in separate function
No worries man. The Transients API is good for situations where you don't need to always have the value saved, you can specify an expiration. However, in my answer I mention the options API as it will save the value to the database and only remove itself when you delete it.

comment How to use shortcode attribute in separate function
Oh, I get you. Well the variable is defined locally within the scope of the shortcode function so to access it you're going to have to store the value somewhere to be accessed from within your filter function. Global variables would work (and Wordpress does extensively use them internally), although if I were you I'd use something like the transients API. I'll update my question for you.
