You're looking for breadcrumbs, not a site map. There are plenty of plugins in the WordPress repository that might suit your purpose: breadcrumbs plugins.

That works too. The only advantage to get_post_type(), I suppose, is that you can use it outside The Loop. But the OP's question seems to take place inside The Loop, so in this case it's six of one.

Also, you can print SQL errors to help with your debugging. Add $wpdb->print_error(); after your $wpdb->insert() call to see if there are any errors.
