@ialocin My client isn't sure if they want this in the sidebar or after the post content, thus the shortcode. Out of curiosity, why would a widget be beneficial? would that render faster than a shortcode?

OK wow! the code was in a "plugin", basically my shortcodes copied into a plugin.php file so they wouldn't be in functions.php. When I saw your question, I tried moving the code into functions.php & it seemed to speed up enormously (Debug Queries still gave same result, but sidebar seems to load instantly now). Moved it back to the plugin, and same - still faster experience. I may have been fooled by Chrome caching an earlier version that was throwing PHP notices?? (If you mean where do I call the shortcode, it's in Black Studio's TinyMCE widget in the sidebar of a single post page.)

Thanks! I ended up using a plugin but I appreciate the answer. Good to know I wasn't going crazy looking for a clean way to handle it. :)

You're right @milo, it was backward. I've updated the code to look for categories with parents. thanks! Hope it works. :)

comment event propagated to google calendar
I'm not sure what you mean by default events widget, but try the plugin Event Organiser: wp-event-organiser.com You can set up events in WordPress, then subscribe to the calendar feed via Google or iCal. When events are edited/added/deleted in WordPress the feed being sent to Google updates as well.

comment Custom blog setting directs blog to index page
blog.php isn't part of the template hierarchy, which is why your posts are displaying per code in the index.php template. See the links in this answer for more info: wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/149446/…
