My bad, didn't realise. Thanks.

comment Conditional tag in Widget Logic for checking if top level page or if subpage
Sure! It was using get_posts to list child pages outside the loop without wp_reset_postdata. So a global $post; conflict I guess.

Thanks for editing your answer jot! But the second option gives me a PHP error: PHP Fatal error: Can't use function return value in write context in ~\widget_logic.php(284) : eval()'d code on line 1

comment Conditional tag in Widget Logic for checking if top level page or if subpage
Thanks RyanLoremIpsum, could it have anything to do with using the WPML plugin? And One Trick Pony, wouldn't that stop it ever working? You see, I have it working on other widgets with simpler arguments. Sorry if that is a silly question :-)

Thanks jot but that doesn't work for me. Firstly, it still shows on both parent and child. Secondly, I really want a solution that does not have to have the parent page ID hardcoded, instead shows on any child page.

Thanks guys but neither of those worked. One Trick Pony, the widget still shows on both parent and child. BandonRandon, it shows on neither.

Thanks Jared for your prompt reply. I believe Tom's answer was just a bit more helpful.

Thanks Tom. I guess I will have to arrange a time. I may also consider trying to send some kind of admin notice in the backend, as described wptheming.com/2011/08/admin-notices-in-wordpress

comment Targeting all pages except top level pages
Thanks Douglas, but that made no difference. However, I think this problem is more complex than originally thought! You see, I can use if ( '0' != $post->post_parent) to include other files no problem. Could be something dodgy in the included file? Oh dear!

comment Scan for first image in post and display it
I think you might have to use the thumbnail size for it to be cropped not distorted. See my example here: carolineelisa.com/shellsnow/blog/beauty

Yes, but this plugin will grab the image at the full size then resize and display it at thumbnail size (by default). You can also choose to display medium, large, full or any custom size.

Have you tried selecting 'Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)' under Media Settings?

From experience, yes much better! I too gave up on using timthumb. But I'm not techie enough to talk specifics. Maybe take a look at: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/get-the-image/faq
