comment read more doesn't display
I tried removing the conditional before posting and it still didn't work. I don't know what the issue is. Most everything the codex says does not work in this template. I am wondering if it is because I am running multiple custom loops in the site and the query doesn't know which query to filter or something. I tried your option 2 with the custom function and that seems to work good. So I am just going to use that. thank you for posting.

I am using the excerpt box under the post box in the edit post page. all reading suggests that adding more than 55 words or even adding the filter will then add a link to read more. The codex says that the_excerpt() does not automatically add a read more link so you need to add the code for a button under the excerpt which I have done. I have added the filter to limit the words to 20 but when I paste more than 55 words in the excerpt box, the entire text shows and I can't see the button because it breaks layout and is hidden. This is a page template. Does it matter it's not the home page?

@brasofilo Thanks for the links. There is some very good information in them. I did not know about the WordPress.tv site. I plan on spending some time there and I signed up for the wordcamp information.

nope. Still didn't do it for me. Obviously the query that I was changing with pre_get_posts wasn't the main query. But then that still leaves the question. If that wasn't the main query, which one is? The loop is the standard loop. I didn't use query_posts, get_posts or wp_query. Rather the_loop does but why is that loop not the main query? Not sure I am explaining myself correctly. I don't like those little slide shows you linked to. They usually leave a lot of information. Like they are cliff notes that someone wrote up for a speech. If you miss the speech you can't follow along very well.

I tried post_link and got a bunch of errors. I change the filter above from the_permalink to post_link and got these errors: fatal error: Maximum function nesting level of '100' reached, aborting!

There is no other shortcode. That is the code word for word in my functions.php file. it's doing the shortcode but none of the content. none of the arguments are working.

this is what I get when I view source <a class="tickets_btn" href="#"></a>. I don't know what you mean "Your output cannot be a result of your shortcode href comes after class" Why does that matter?
