comment pre_get_posts and the blog page
This is what I ended up with. This gave me the best result.. Adding 'page' == get_option('show_on_front') seems to have worked the best

I think it would be more correct to say that I didn't understand your explanation. It may have made perfect sense. n any case, your solution isn't working for me. I got an error with the $query->is_main_query. I had to take it out. But it also makes the home page show the blog posts and the blog page show the blog posts when "Show latest posts" is selected. I am trying to filter just the blog posts for the blog page through the index instead of setting up a separate template.

comment pre_get_posts and the blog page
Sorry Pieter, but your answer doesn't make any sense to me. The blog page can't be my front page if I set a static front page as a template. So I am trying to filter the posts that go to the blog page through the index loop so that only the posts in the blog category will show, otherwise, it should get all posts

This is working. I took the code from the 2012 theme. I used it the same way in my theme. That is why I thought it would work. All I did was add my html.

That is an interesting thought. I did not try that. this isn't really a multiple loop issue though. The loop is suppose to get posts and pages. I would think right outside the if statement for the template I should be able to get posts. Just not sure how to do that.

comment problem including page template
I am using a page template for the homepage. I am trying to include all templates and pages on the front page. Get_pages doesn't work because it won't get the HTML in the template. Are you thinking there is a better way? I am open to your suggestions

get_template_directory did the same thing for me as get_template_directory_uri. I tried get_page_template and that seems to work out ok. I think my code is messed up a little though because it puts the footer before the main content. But all the pages that I need are there and the content is correct.
