Why don't you want to install the theme manually? Otherwise you have to set up FTP on your local Ubuntu.

Yes, the one saves your terms. It's better to update your question rather than post comment with code.

The last idea is to add global $sitepress; before the code above.

comment How to remove WPML Generator Meta Tag by theme's functions.php (override plugin function)?
I've found an old theme of mine where just one line was used in functions.php: remove_action( 'wp_head', array($sitepress, 'meta_generator_tag' ) );.

No, keep it ON on production stage. I've just asked to check there are no PHP errors. This code works perfectly for me in both WP3.4 and WP3.6.1. Please make sure you've copied it thoroughly.

Do you have DEBUG on? Also I've updated the code. It was assigning the identifier for all types, not only 'post'.

comment A question of etiquette when forking a plugin?
IMO, when you update the readme.txt you also make a kind of contribution. So, if plugin authors do not wants to use your version you'll not be credited. Otherwise they should keep your readme too (if it is not heavy modified and satisfies their requirements).
