comment When to use 'get_category_by_path' vs. 'get_term_by' to get category object from `get_query_var( 'category_name' )`?
Actually, get_category_by_slug uses get_term_by not get_category_by_path, or am I missing something? (github.com/WordPress/WordPress/blob/master/wp-includes/…)

comment Show a 404 error page if Public query variable's value doesn't exist?
Yes, I have. (Makes sense; but I haven't tested it yet -- have to get back home.) Thanks a lot! :)

comment is_archive() doesn't work on public query var archive pages?
No. Like I said earlier, in a way, is_archive() includes is_category(), is_tag, etc. -- all archives. But it's not working in my case.

is_archive() returns true for category, tag, date, et al archives. So I don't understand the point of your answer.

comment Show a 404 error page if Public query variable's value doesn't exist?
Is there a way I can make the function check if it's an archive of posts displayed by using public query vars in URL? `is_archive(); doesn't work, I've tried. Besides, your function will return a 404 error even if the term exists, but has no posts, doesn't it?

comment get_post_meta() not loaded with wp-load
As I see it, you'll have to get post meta directly from the database as you did with the post ID; because full WP hasn't loaded yet, and therefore WordPress hasn't queried the database yet.
