No. The main container is natively hardcoded in the shortcode function, so itemtag refers to the single item/image. I don't want a separate ul for each image, there's no reason at all. See my own answer below.

Also, I think there's really no point in letting you to change the inner tags but not the outer one. well, you CAN do it with the 'gallery_style' filter, but then you loose useful classes because the filter itself doesn't give you access to sensible informations used to build that classes (for example the number of items/columns)

Ok no. Excuse me but I forgot to mention that I want a single list. There's absolutely no point in creating 1 UL for each image. I frankly can't get the reason why wordpress devs made the gallery generate 1 list for each image: it's not semantically correct, harder to style, and also no css framework (ex. bootstrap, foundation) has any sugar for that, since it's just wrong code...

comment How to have the thumbnail cropping tool working
Yes that's not a good thing. Though, that's not the way to solve my problem and, as I see, a problem of really a lot of people. Basically, it seems that tool simply doesn't work even in 3.8.1

comment how to both crop (with tool) and resize thumbnails having only a max width constrain?
The reason for having it, is that I need to build products pages with galleries, where there will be always an arbitrary number of images (1 to 4) and with arbitrary widths. A way of doing it is in fact to register several image sizes that suits all the use cases (300,320,340, etc..) and then pass the right size to the shortcode each time, but I was searching for a more elegant (and easier for my client) solution, like simply the ability to resize each thumb to arbitrary dimesions if less then the media option value.
