Thank you! That didn't get me exactly what I wanted, but it was close enough to help me find the answer. The problem was that I don't know the menu name or slug, only the theme name set in the register_nav_menu statement. I did find some code to determine the menu name however. With that in hand, I could use your code above.

Thanks for the answer. I realize I could do it with CSS, but the list will be out of order. Going across the columns you would get one, two, three, four at the top. What I need is one, four, seven, nine. In other words, the list goes down the first column, then down the second column, and so on.
