For some functions WordPress needs to be specifically told to conform to the html5 markup. This is done with `add_theme_support`.

This is done with add_theme_support( 'html5', array( 'comment-list', 'comment-form', 'search-form', 'gallery', 'caption' ) );. The list of five possible functions to add in the array may expand in the future.
