Wordpress is riddled with horrible coding conventions, hacks and it's generally just a messy piece of software that just so happens to be widely used. Don't get me wrong, I love Wordpress, but implementing changes and optimising it can be a bit of a nightmare because it's littered with OOP in some places, procedural coding in other places and uses things like global variables.

Would it be worth rewriting Wordpress? If I were to use a framework like Codeigniter or Kohana and standardised the way plugins and themes worked, potentially breaking backwards compatibility would others take to it? Are there any legalities surrounding Wordpress even though I am certain it's open source?

I would most likely use BackPress for some functionality, but rewrite other parts like the blog system and make it less hacky and cleaner. My apologies if this question is on the wrong StackExchange website.
