I feel like every Wordpress theme is the same. Some are better than others, but there just isn't much variation. I was looking into redesigning my site but thought I'd look through Wordpress themes first, but everything I've found seems to just be a new rendering of another one. Where do you get Wordpress themes that are different than your run of the mill themes?

I really like the sites of a couple of my contacts: www.roguemethodinc.com and www.cubancouncil.com. I think I like these because they do not look like some cheap theme. Is there any way to get around this predicament without having a custom design?

Most of the portfolios I've viewed in the last few days are exactly the same. What would you suggest?

The theme developers get no value for money from designing something that will be sold for only few people. If you want to stand out you need costume design.

And btw, maybe you don't find themes like the one for your first site because its design sucks? that one page site has Tl;Dr written all over it..... not a very good idea for a portfolio site.

If you are really serious about your site then you need to first decide what are the goals of the site, then go to a designer to design it for you and only then start looking for a theme that matches your requirements.
