I have an action hook set up that copies a post (when published) to my own database. This has worked fine for all my test posting, but when I tried publishing a post with lengthy content, the INSERT query now returns false. I did a little searching, and found that the MySQL variable max_allowed_packet is probably to blame. I use Bluehost to host my site, and I found the variable in phpMyAdmin, but I can't find a way to change it. I also have a hook that updates my database when a post is edited, and if I edit the post to have lengthy text, it returns false as well.

My thought is to call/chat with Bluehost, and see if they can change it, but before I do all this editing, I'd like to get some input from you guys to see if this is even necessary. Any suggestions? They'd be very much appreciated.

Also my max_allowed_packet variable = 268,435,456

Thanks

Contacting hosting support seems to be best course of action here. If WordPress itself is working, they are most qualified to tell what is going wrong with your custom non-WP database. – Rarst Oct 1 '12 at 0:28
