Does anyone have a recommendation on a good plugin that cal send an email message to all active Buddypress members?

Are you sending the message as the Admin, or do you want each user to be able to send messages to all other users? – kalengi Jul 25 '12 at 18:41

This is a plugin send private message on wordpress

which can be used for communication, it enables users on your site to send private messages to each other, User can send private message to multiple groups (wordpress’s role) or multiple members with rich text editor – Wordpress editor default, user can attach photos, files to messages.

According to this: http://wpmu.org/how-to-send-a-site-wide-notice-or-a-site-wide-private-message-in-buddypress/ the Admin can send private messages to all users via the BuddyPress Mass Messaging plugin.

Thanks @kalengi. I have actually used it. Here's how it works -- it posts a message internally within Buddypress to the users message page and it also posts an nicely formatted alert notification in the right column widget area. But what I need is the ability to send an external "email message" to all users. Mainly because I want to trigger them to come back to BP to view information. The BP site alert operates on the premise that members login. I need a mechanism to reach them to get them too login. Hope that helps. – frank13 Jul 25 '12 at 19:27
