I am trying to access the customizer (WP 3.4) via the frontend (no wp-admin/customizer.php). I need this for a wordpress multisite installation where the individual site owners don't have access to the dashboard. I create a page with a slug "customize" and view it. I then create a file called page-customize.php on my theme. These are the contents of the file:

<?php
/**
 * Customize Controls
 *
 * @package WordPress
 * @subpackage Customize
 * @since 3.4.0
 */

define( 'IFRAME_REQUEST', true );

require_once(ABSPATH . 'wp-admin/admin.php');
if ( ! current_user_can( 'edit_theme_options' ) )
    wp_die( __( 'Cheatin&#8217; uh?' ) );

wp_reset_vars( array( 'url', 'return' ) );
$url = urldecode( $url );
$url = wp_validate_redirect( $url, home_url( '/' ) );
if ( $return )
    $return = wp_validate_redirect( urldecode( $return ) );
if ( ! $return )
    $return = $url;

global $wp_scripts, $wp_customize;

$registered = $wp_scripts->registered;
$wp_scripts = new WP_Scripts;
$wp_scripts->registered = $registered;

</body>
</html>

The problem is that when I try to access the /customize path I am redirected to the login page. If I enter my credentials I am and press "login", I redirected back to the login page.

All of that while being logged-in! (when trying to access the /wp-admin path, it works correctly).

the only change between the above code and the wp-admin/customize.php is that line 12 has been changed to require_once(ABSPATH . 'wp-admin/admin.php'); – Aris Jul 2 '12 at 20:15
