Is it possible to force previous/next navigation to browse through the posts (back and forth) that are only inside the same category (and to exclude other categories)?

Scribu's Smarter Navigation plugin does exactly this.

Fantastic it works. I was a bit confused in the beginning as I couldn't find any settings where to modify or work with the plugin. After some time, I figured out that on the section of the installed plugins I had to click at EDIT, and there I found the plugin info where it states which lines should be modified in the theme file titled "single.php". Thanks so much Christoper for the tip. Just tested and it works. –  Bloglimits Apr 9 '12 at 20:37

Sorry, should have mentioned that! Glad you figured it out. –  Christopher Apr 9 '12 at 20:52

The functions accept an $in_same_cat argument, the default value of which is false. Just set that to true.

previous_post_link($format, $link, true);
next_post_link($format, $link, true);
