When you ask where are they stored for BuddyPress / WordPress? Do you mean, WordPress with the budypress plug-in?

For Wordpress the users are stored in the wp_users table. The users's role is stored in the wp_usermeta with meta_key 'capabilities'. The user_id column in that table references the ID in the users table.

I don't know about BuddyPress.

Thanks @StephenHarris. That was the answer. BuddyPress uses WordPress' _usermeta table for roles. –  H. Ferrence Jan 25 '12 at 14:53
