WordPress Answers is a question and answer site for WordPress developers and administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

So, I'm redoing my portfolio at a different domain. And want to use my previous domain for another project; I'm trying really hard to get Wordpress's 'Export' > 'Import' feature to work properly. So I can just 'import' all my older content as opposed to uploading it all one by one again at my new site.

I go into my old site; select 'Export' > get the exported xml file > download it to desktop > go into my new website's Wordpress install > select import > attach the file > then 500 error. Every time - what am I doing wrong? Is there any other way to try this; it's not just this time - I seem to never be able to use that feature.

As-written, this question borders on being both not a real question (i.e. cannot reasonably be answered in its current form) and too localized. – Chip Bennett Feb 15 '12 at 14:33

Check your server logs to see what they say. Some of the solutions could be one or a combination of the following:

  • Disable all plugins
  • Increase your memory limit in php.ini
  • (re)Install the WordPress importer
  • Change upload_max_filesize or post_max_size in php.ini
