I have some experience with wordpress, coded some plugins, customized a lot of themes and did some core mods for a custom multisite network. It wasn't hard since I already knew PHP, but I never really got into the "wordpress world" to learn the best practices.

Now I want to develop a theme that I am planning to use for a lot of websites, so I wanted to ask people with experience:

Which things should I avoid doing while creating this theme?

This question is rather over-broad. As such, it really doesn't fit the WPSE Q & A format. Could you modify it, to try to limit the scope a bit more? That way, you'll be more likely to solicit good answers. – Chip Bennett Nov 3 '11 at 0:54
@ChipBennett Do you think "top 3 things to avoid" would be better? – todgil Nov 3 '11 at 1:04
IMHO Valid as community wiki, but I think we already have some sort of "best practice" Qs... or not? – kaiser Nov 3 '11 at 1:22
@kaiser Please link me to some, i dont even know what wiki you are talking about. – todgil Nov 3 '11 at 1:28

@ChipBennett Ok, I will think what's the first specific thing I want to learn and edit the question. – todgil Nov 3 '11 at 2:10

You should AVOID being lazy, writing bad code and asking questions on forums without asking Google first. These should get you started...

(here come the downvotes, even if they all agree with me)

Instead of focusing on what "Not to do" rather focus on what you should be doing to build proper themes.

Bloggers don't write wordpress advice about what users should not do, you will find they are all about helping understand what should be done.

Always build a theme so it will be easy for others to understand and use it.. even if that is not the initial intention, things change and it will also help you down the line.

Here is a good place to get yo started.

and

Then if that is not enough.. just google "wordpress theming best practices"
