WordPress Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for WordPress developers and administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

My template shows thumbnails as square images. Currently, cropping is enabled.

Problem is, when I upload i.e. 1000x200px image, with some label (e.g. "EXAMPLE"), only "MP" will be displayed in the cropped thumbnail with size of 200x200px...

I would love to have 200x200px thumb showing everything from the original image with white stripes in the top and bottom of new image

here is uploaded image: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78426466/wp/horizontal.jpg

what is generated: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78426466/wp/cropped.jpg

what I want: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78426466/wp/filled.jpg

Now, I modify each image before uploading - is there any simple way to make wordpress do the work?

To answer your actual question: No, there's no simple way. You'll need to do some research, try something and come with a more detailed question (this works, this part not, etc.) as it else would be off topic according to the help center (work for me for free). –  kaiser Aug 16 '13 at 2:00
