WordPress Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for WordPress developers and administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I wanted to use WordPress Social Login http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-social-login/ in one of my setups. I did some test and found that is really efficient and well designed among all other "social connect" plugins! (imho)

Unfortunately, it won't run on my host where I want to use it - WPEngine. The reason is that WPEngine does not support PHP sessions when a user is not logged in and this plugin makes use of them instead of client side cookies.

I had a quick look at the code and php sessions are rather central in this plugin: https://github.com/hybridauth/WordPress-Social-Login

I did contact WPEngine support of course, but it won't make a difference if they don't support PHP sessions.

Does any of you managed to Do you think there's any workaround for this? Did you manage to make it work on WPEngine? I've read someone on WP Answers suggesting creating a fake login to start a session, but that is not really clever since it would hit WPE and might lead to more problems.

I was even thinking to fork the plugin and check if it's possible to replace sessions with cookies (which would be working in WPEngine). But I'm not sure if I'd be able to do it alone.

Or alternatively does any of you know something equally good? Even commercial - I checked Janrain RPX and other "all-in-one" platforms/third party services use but I don't really like the approach. Other plugins I tried aren't as good and complete as WP Social Login or are not supported well (or at all anymore).
