How Can A Widget With Only One Instance Be Defined?

... @OneTrickPony says:

another way might be to set the _multiwidget option to 0. Like $settings = get_option("widget_text"); $settings['_multiwidget'] = 0; update_option("widget_text", $settings);

I'd like to set the _multiwidget option to 0 in my custom sidebar widget class, but I'm not sure where to put the above code.

Could anyone provide a complete example of how/where to use the above code in a sidebar widget class (like the class found on the docs page)?
